CROCODILE ENSURES FULL COMPLIANCE WITH
EMERGENCY EU WOOD PACKAGING LEGISLATION
On 1st October 2001, emergency EU
legislation will be implemented to restrict imports of
wood packaging materials in an attempt to avoid the
introduction of the damaging Bursaphelenchus xylophilus,
commonly known as the pine wood nematode, into European
Union countries. However, users can easily comply with
this stringent new legislation without increasing costs
or compromising load security by specifying bespoke
packaging solutions from Crocodile Packaging.
The pine wood nematode (PWN) is
currently one of the most dangerous threats to the world’s
pine forests. Nematode infestation causes pine wilt
disease which is characterised by the rapid wilting of
trees followed by death within a few months. European
monitoring inspections over recent months have confirmed
that shipments of non-manufactured coniferous wood
packing material, originating from Canada, the United
States, China and Japan, were found to contain PWN
infestations. To protect native pine forests, the
European Commission has followed the example of many
Australasian countries and has issued a series of
emergency measures designed to eliminate the risk of
infestation. From October 2001, containers incorporating
softwood outer casings or struts which have not been
adequately treated or accompanied by appropriate
certification, will be refused entry, incinerated or
processed in other approved ways.
Made from manufactured wood products
such as plywood, oriented strand board and presswood
blocks, the entire Crocodile Packaging range of bespoke
packaging systems complies with the new EU legislation.
Crocodile systems are designed to protect items of any
size and shape during short or long haul transit. The
company offers cost-effective one-trip and reusable
solutions tailored to meet specific application
requirements. Ideal for shipping, airfreight, road
transport and even manual handling, Crocodile units are
easy to assemble yet extremely robust.
Commenting on the EU legislation,
Quentin Philip, Managing Director of Crocodile
Packaging, says “Many specifiers have yet to address
the serious consequences of this new directive. After
October, users reliant on the global transfer of goods
will have to ensure that all wood packaging meets the
necessary standards. Beating the nematode problem,
Crocodile can help users meet these standards without
compromising the cost-effectiveness or performance of
their logistics operations. Crocodile customers can
already be assured that their containers are constructed
from strong, cost-effective manufactured wood which
fully complies with import legislation.”
