Most box manufacturers
make standard sizes of case… for example a
"Euro" size footprint is 1200 x 800mm.
Don't waste space This Euro dimension is just
perfect for anyone who makes products that are this
size!… However, if your components are 1250mm long
or 4 of them packed together are 900mm wide then
there is a problem… Either there will be much
wasted space in the smaller box or another size will
have to be used, usually meaning that there will be
wasted space in a larger box!
Shipping fresh air and extra padding is an expensive
business as well as exposing your product to the
risk of damage from excessive movement within the
box.
Crocodile tailored boxes All Crocodile boxes are
made to order. This doesn't mean that we can't make
"standard" sized boxes if that's what you
want. It does mean though, that we can build boxes
to fit your products exactly, making the most of the
space within the box as well as optimising load
space on the selected transport.
We will be pleased to visit and measure your
products and then design a box that provides a snug
fit, taking account of any internal foam protection
or padding to stabilise the load.
The example below shows how a Crocodile system can
reduce the number of required boxes and go on to
save large amounts of money:
Case Study:
A manufacturing company currently sources 500
air-conditioning units per week from a manufacturer
in Belgium. The units measure 920 x 560 x 320mm and
are shipped in 1200 x 800 x500mm cardboard boxes
that are stacked 4 high on Euro pallets, banded and
shrink wrapped. Internal padding is required to take
up the wasted space around the units.
The total cost of the packaging for each 4 units is
£19.24, or £2,405 per week for the required 125
pallets needed to transport the 500 units… The
pallets cannot be stacked and all the packaging is
subject to packaging waste Legislation. In addition
much product wastage is caused by forklift and other
in-transit damage and valuable time is spent
physically disposing of the wasted materials.
Crocodile's solution is to make a re-usable plywood
case with internal dimensions of 1220 x 1060 x
1392mm, incorporating shelves and foam to transport
8 units at a time. Cost per box is £128.50, but
only 63 per week are needed and the boxes can be
re-used. A total of 189 boxes are built to satisfy a
3-week turnaround cycle. The total cost of these
Crocodile boxes is £24,287.
Each year, the company in question saves a total of
£100,773 over their previous system.
In addition to the pure cost of packaging materials
there are also savings from reduced transport costs,
reduced storage costs due to stacking, considerably
reduced product damage, reduced packaging waste
obligation and benefits in handling times, health
and safety and company image.
